Other Ways to Support SSP!

Alternative Spring Break Projects

Each Spring, Sierra Service Project customized Alternative Spring Break experiences for college fellowship groups.  These sessions all take place at our South Los Angeles project location and combine service to the community with learning about the social realities of South Los Angeles.  All of this takes place in an atmosphere of fostering spiritual growth.

This program has several aims:

bullet

To help participants grow in Christian leadership through service

bullet

To sustain a relationship with young people who wish to continue their SSP experience into adulthood

bullet

To offer age-appropriate spiritual programs

bullet

To function as an extension of college and campus ministries.

We are tentatively planning to host 2009 Spring Break Projects during the weeks of March 7, 14 and 21, 2009.  Our programs have typically been five-nights long, but this can be customized to the needs and the schedules of the attending groups.  We are also able to host sessions on weeks other than these three.

For a session to take place, we need a minimum of 10 participants.  We work directly with interested groups to create a schedule of work and study activities that matches their objectives.  For example, the 2007 project schedule included the following:
bullet

Attendance at two inner city worship services on Sunday morning.

bullet

A guided bus tour of downtown and South Los Angeles.

bullet

A visit to a service ministry for GLBT Hispanic immigrants.

bullet

A visit to a center for homeless teenagers and an gang-prevention drop-in center for children and teens.

bullet

An evening of song, worship and barbeque at the beach.

bullet

Four days of construction and repair service work.

The cost of the 2009 program will be around $230, which covers everything except transportation to Los Angeles.  Our project site is only 20 minutes from LAX.

These sessions are open to any college-age individuals and any college ministry groups.  If you are part of a group whose spring break does not correspond to these weeks, please call our office at 916-488-6441 (or email rickeaton@sierraserviceproject.org) to discuss the possibility of adding a session for you.

General Information

SSP's young adult mission program is an intense and exciting service experience.  It combines the power of the "traditional" SSP program with the energies and maturity of the 18- to 30-year-old age group.
