Summer Staff Positions at SSP

SSP construction coordinator talks with homeowner on Navajo Nation

Being a member of the SSP staff is an incredibly rewarding and challenging experience -- unlike any other summer job you will ever have.  Our staffers live and work together for nine intense weeks, running all aspects of six weeks of summer service for over three hundred youth.

 

Although each position has unique responsibilities, all staff members share in the responsibility for safeguarding the health and safety of all campers.  In addition, all staff participate in and contribute to all aspects of each week's spiritual program, and are expected to model the Christian spirit of love and service at all times.

Information about SSP Staff Positions

 

Successful staff members exhibit the following attributes:

All staff are paid a salary for the summer.  The salary is based upon the position and the amount of SSP experience you have.  Meals and room-and-board are included, as is transportation from Sacramento, California to your work site (and back). 

 

Each staff team consists of the following positions.  Click on each job title for a brief description.

Our construction teams are composed of some combination of the following three positions:

Supply Coordinator.

bulletConstruction Coordinator.
bulletHome Repair Coordinator.

 

In addition to the construction folks, the following positions are available on each staff team:

Site Director.

Spiritual Life Coordinator.

Cook.

Supply Coordinator

There are two Supply Coordinators at each site where there is a Home Repair Coordinator. The Supply Coordinators purchase building materials and deliver them and tools to each of the individual work-sites. They are responsible for check-out and check-in of all tools from the various work teams. Supply Coordinators must be able to drive a pick-up truck and must be highly organized. In conjunction with the Home Repair Coordinator, the Supply Coordinators maintain inventory control of materials and building supplies. They may provide construction advice as they visit each work-site.  At the end of the project season, the supply coordinators are responsible for making a detailed tool inventory and moving all tools and equipment to the winter storage site.

Base Salary: $2200 per summer*

Construction Coordinator

Some sites utilize teams of three construction coordinators rather than employing a home repair coordinator and two supply coordinators.  A construction coordinator is responsible for oversee repair activities and supplying work teams with tools and materials.  In addition, construction coordinators are responsible for doing home intakes and planning work projects, ordering and tracking materials and performing cost-outs.

Base Salary: $2400 per summer*

Home Repair Coordinator

The Home Repair Coordinator (HRC) is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the home repair program. He/she should have a good knowledge of basic house repair that includes painting, roofing, drywalling and basic carpentry. The HRC must also teach some of these skills to campers as he/she oversees and directs the work at the individual homes. The Home Repair Coordinator assesses the repair needs of each home, plans the work, oversees purchasing of supplies, and works closely with the two Supply Coordinators. He/she must be organized, and able to work with a minimum of technical supervision. The HRC compiles a short report at the end of the season consisting the specific work at each home, materials used, and the cost of the repair job.

Base Salary: $3100 summer*

Site Director

The Site Director is responsible for the overall operation of the site: supervising the staff and ensuring that everyone involved in SSP -- campers, staff, counselors and our hosts -- has a safe and spirit-filled experience.  Prior SSP experience is almost essential either as a camper, adult volunteer, staff-in-training (SIT) or prior staff employment. Site Directors must model Christian values, demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making, and have a demonstrated history of working with remote supervision. Site Directors lead and initiate community building among staff, campers, Native American hosts, and others who participate in the life of the Project.

Site Directors are selected as early in the year as possible and participate in the hiring of the rest of the staff.

Spiritual Life Coordinator

The Spiritual Life Coordinator is responsible for the creation and implementation of the worship and spiritual programs for the summer. This individual must have a good understanding of the Christian faith and a demonstrated history of designing worship experiences, especially as they relate to youth. The Spiritual Life Coordinator should be able to lead both large and small groups and be able to speak effectively in public. He/she should also be able to work independently with a minimum of supervision. Good organizational skills are necessary.

The major worship/spiritual programs are conducted in the evening. Other shorter programmatic exercises occur at various times of the day and week. The Spiritual Life Coordinator is responsible for writing a summary report of the spiritual program for the summer.

Cook

Each site is staffed by two cooks who prepare the morning and evening meals, and supervise the making of sandwiches for lunch. They insure that a healthy, well-balanced diet is available to all campers, including those with special dietary needs.  Cooks are responsible for menu planning, food purchase, meal preparation, cooking, and supervision of kitchen cleanup. One evening a week consists of a 'cook-out.' General cooking knowledge is preferable but detailed knowledge of institutional food preparation is not necessary.  

The position of cook is considered an "entry level" SSP job.  Many individuals have started their SSP staff careers at the Cook position and have moved on in subsequent summers to positions of Spiritual Life Coordinator, Home Repair Coordinator and Site Director.
