Support SIERRA SERVICE PROJECT: Turn Shopping into Giving

Other Ways to Support SSP!

Ways To Support SSP

To fulfill its mission of introducing young people to the life-changing power of service, SSP actively seeks donations from individuals, businesses, foundations and churches.  We only get about 80 percent of our operating budget from the fees paid by participants. Without donations, we would have to raise our fees by at least $60.

There are many ways to help:  you can donate online, volunteer your time, use your purchasing power to help SSP, donate in other ways or contribute to SSP's Next Generation Fund.

Utilize Your Purchasing Power

GoodShop is a nonprofit "shopping mall" which is linked to dozens of well-known retailers - everything from iTunes to Macy's.  When you shop at GoodShop and select Sierra Service Project as your benefiting charity, these merchants return a percentage (usually between 1 and 4 percent) to us.  Click here to check out the merchants available on GoodShop.

There are an increasing number of vendors who will donate a portion of your purchases to a charity of your choice.  Below are six options that we have investigated and enrolled in.  These are painless ways for you to support Sierra Service Project!

Buy at Amazon.Com

SSP is part of Amazon's Associate Program.  When you purchase something from Amazon, they will donate 4% of your purchase to Sierra Service Project.  To make this work, you have to enter Amazon's website through one of the links on our website like the one below.

Raleys, BelAir and Nob Hill Cards

If you shop at Raley's, BelAir or Nob Hill Foods stores, you can register your Quality of Life card with SSP and we'll receive between up to 4 percent of your monthly purchase value.  Simply pick up a Quality of Life card from the store and the go online to activate your card.  Finally, be sure to click on the "Scrip" link and register your card with Sierra Service Project.

eScrip

Sign up for loyalty cards with participating eScrip merchants.  Go online to register your loyalty card with Sierra Service Project.  That's all!  When you make a purchase at one of these merchants, SSP receives a percentage of the value of your purchase.  Participating merchants include Macy's, Target, Eddie Bauer, Linens-n-Things and many more. Other Ways To Donate

bulletCorporate matching.  Many companies will match your contributions to nonprofit organizations like SSP. This is a great way to double the power of your contribution to Sierra Service Project.
bulletCorporate giving.  SSP's work of improving the quality of housing in under-served communities supports the aims of many corporate philanthropic activities, particularly those in the construction supply, real estate and building industries.  We are actively seeking monetary and in-kind donations from these sources.
bulletChurches.  SSP receives annual contributions from a number churches, and we are eager to add more to this list.  If your congregation is interested in entering into a supporting relationship with SSP, please contact us.
bulletGood condition trucks and vans.  We need late-model (around Year 2000 or newer) trucks and vans for our summer project.  The new tax laws allow you to claim the full value of such a vehicle when it is put to use by a nonprofit.  We need full-size and small pick-up trucks and passenger and cargo vans.
bulletDonate any vehicle.  If you have a vehicle that we can't make use of, you can still donate it!  We'll sell it through an auction service and you'll receive the tax benefit.  Call us for the details.
bulletRemember SSP in your will.  You can add SSP as the beneficiary of a tax-free gift from your estate.  This is a fantastic way to assure that Sierra Service Project remains strong and vital for generations to come.  Please call our office to discuss how you would like to designate your legacy gift.

Volunteer Your Time

We have a fairly constant need for capable and energetic volunteers to assist with various tasks throughout the year.  Our volunteer opportunities include the following:

bulletHauling tools and equipment.  We always need experienced drivers at the beginning and end of the summer to haul our trailers and other equipment to and from our sites.
bulletOffice assistances.  If you live in the Sacramento area, you can volunteer to work in our offices in Carmichael - either on a regular basis or for a more intense, one-time project.
bulletOutreach.  Tell other churches and groups about Sierra Service Project!  If you enjoy speaking in public, we can set you up to speak to groups in your region about SSP.
bulletFixing and maintaining SSP's trucks and trailers.  SSP owns several trucks and trailers that need annual maintenance and repair.  If you are an experienced mechanic, let's talk about the possibility of putting your skills and tools to work.

Next Generation Fund

Sierra Service Project has created the Next Generation Fund to finance the development and launching of five long-term initiatives.  These initiatives will respond to needs and opportunities that we believe will present themselves over the next 10 years.  Our objective is to raise $120,000 in major donations to create this fund.  The long-term objectives defined by the Board of Directors are:

  1. To develop an age-appropriate service program for middle school youth, based upon but not identical to the existing SSP youth program.
  2. To investigate and develop a cross-border service program in Northern Mexico which will leverage our experience with youth projects in the U.S. and in Honduras.
  3. To make our programs culturally accessible to low-income and ethnic/minority youth and to Develop and make a concerted effort to reach out to these groups.
  4. Expand our very successful service program with the poor in Honduras.
  5. Investigate and open a urban ministry site in Northern California similar to our program in South Los Angeles.

If you want to learn more about contributing to the Next Generation Fund, please download the fund brochure and call our office for a discussion with the Executive Director.

SSP is an independent 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in the State of California.  All donations to SSP are fully tax deductible.
