Other Ways to Support SSP!

Walker River Reservation Site

SSP will return to Schurz, Nevada, and the wonderful the Walker River Paiute Tribe this summer.  Last summer, our first in this hot, dry and beautiful community, was very successful.  The reservation is located 100 miles southeast of Reno, Nevada, in the high, dry desert country.  We will be staying at the elementary school in the tiny town of Schurz, where there is one gas station and small market.  About 900 people live on the Walker River Reservation.

Accommodations.  The local elementary school has a large gym, large kitchen and plenty of bathrooms.  It's a beautiful facility and will serve us well.  It has a locker room and "group type" showers.  (Unfortunately, the hot water wasn't working last summer and probably won't be this summer, either.)

Directions:  The town of Schurz is located on Highway 95.  From the west, the best route is to take I-80 east to Fernley.  From Fernley, go east on Alt-50 to Fallon and then south on Highway 95 to Schurz.  From Southern California, the best route is probably to go north on 395 to Bishop.  From Bishop, take Highway 6 and then Highway 360 to Hawthorne.  At Hawthorne, go north on Highway 95 until you reach Schurz.  (As always, you should be sure to figure out your own route to the site.)  The school is located about 1/2 mile south of town.

Our Work.  There is plenty of challenging work to do on the reservation, where there are about 400 houses, many of which are quite old.  Last summer we did roofing, painting, stairs and ramps and other types of repairs.  You can expect more of the same.

The Weather.  Hot and dry!  The elevation of Schurz is 4100 feet, so temperatures can get into the low 100's during the summer with very low humidity.  Nights cool down to the 60's and 70's.  Everyone needs to bring hats, sunscreen, chap stick and plenty of water containers.
