2010 Site Information
2010 Participating Church Groups
SSP Opens Idaho Project Site!Due to very high enrollment demand, SSP has decided to open a program site in Fort Hall, Idaho, for the upcoming summer. We have been invited by the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes to use the local high school as our base of operations and we will work exclusively on building wheelchair ramps for elderly and disabled tribal members. If you have not yet registered a group for this summer, consider the Fort Hall option!
Below are our site plans for the summer. Click on the site name for a full page description. We will continue to update these pages as we get more information. Questions? Feel free to email or call us! Study Guides. We have written some basic study guides to help your teams learn about the communities they will be visiting. Click on the link in each site section to download a copy of the study guide for that site. The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes - Fort Hall, Idaho: Fort Hall is located just north of Pocatello in eastern Idaho. It is a very large reservation occupying the Snake River Valley and surrounding mountain areas. There are about 3,500 tribal members currently living on the reservation. This is SSP's first opportunity to work in Idaho and we are excited! Click on the link to learn more. Navajo Nation - Northeastern Arizona: We plan to work in the community of Teec Nos Pos, Arizona, on the northeast portion of the Navajo Nation. Teec Nos Pos is located 220 miles from Flagstaff, close to four corners. There should be lots of wonderful interaction with the local community this summer. Download the Navajo Nation study guide. Yurok Reservation, Klamath, California: We are very excited about our plans for a first-ever project with the Yurok Tribe on the far-northern coast of California. Several years ago we worked for two summers in Pecwan, which is in a different portion of the Yurok Reservation. In Klamath, we'll be right on the coast, so we expect to have cool days and even cooler nights. We will stay at the local Margaret Keating School in Klamath, where we will cook, sleep and shower. Download the Yurok Tribe study guide.
Indian Valley, California: We have return to work in the beautiful area known as "Indian Valley" located about 4 hours (by car) from Sacramento. We will be staying at the United Methodist Church in Greenville and will work on houses in the surrounding rural communities. The altitude is about 4,000 feet, so expect hot days and cooler nights. Download the Indian Valley study guide. McDermitt, Nevada: The Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone Reservation is located a few miles south of the small town of McDermitt, Nevada. McDermitt is located on the Nevada-Oregon border 75 miles north of Winnemucca. We will be housed at the McDermitt Combined School which has a spacious gym, a kitchen, and locker rooms for showering. Download the Fort McDermitt study guide. Urban Los Angeles: As always, our urban immersion will take place in the neighborhoods of South Los Angeles. Our LA program is always extremely well received by our participants. We will once again be housed in the spacious Vermont Square United Methodist Church. The service experience is enhanced by a day of touring the city, visiting social services agencies, feeding the homeless on Skid Row and spending an evening at the beach. This will be an exciting urban immersion experience. Our facility includes showers and indoor toilets. Download the South LA study guide.
Price Reduction! There is a special $50 discount for any groups registering for 4th of July week in Los Angeles. Want to learn more about Indian people? We have found a very good and readable source called "American Indian Facts of Life" by George Russell. We received Mr. Russell's permission to duplicate portions of the book and have included this in the prep packet. If you are interested in purchasing the entire book, check your local bookstore or you can purchase it from Amazon.com. General Information about Indian Tribes.
