2009 Site Information

Site Information.  Below are our site plans for the summer.  Click on the site name for a full page description.  We will continue to update these pages as we get more information.  Questions?  Feel free to email or call us!

Study Guides.  We have written some basic study guides to help your teams learn about the communities they will be visiting.  Click on the link in each site section to download a copy of the study guide for that site.

Navajo Nation - Northeastern Arizona:  We will most likely work in the community of Teec Nos Pos, Arizona, on the northeast portion of the Navajo Nation.  Currently we are awaiting a formal invitation from the Chapter of Teec Nos Pos.  Teec Nos Pos is located 220 miles from Flagstaff, close to four corners. There should be lots of wonderful interaction with the local community this summer.  Download the Navajo Nation study guide.

Round Valley, California:

Loleta, California: We will be working again with the Wiyot Tribe on their small but beautiful Table Bluff Reservation.  The reservation is very near Loleta, California, located about 250 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 101.  We will be staying at the Loleta Elementary School and using their gym for sleeping and program.  Download the Wiyot Tribe study guide.

Indian Valley, California: We have return to work in the beautiful area known as "Indian Valley" located about 4 hours (by car) from Sacramento.  We will be staying at the United Methodist Church in Greenville and will work on houses in the surrounding rural communities.  The altitude is about 4,000 feet, so expect hot days and cooler nights.  Download the Indian Valley study guide.

McDermitt, Nevada: The Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone Reservation is located a few miles south of the small town of McDermitt, Nevada.  McDermitt is located on the Nevada-Oregon border 75 miles north of Winnemucca.  We will be housed at the McDermitt Combined School which has a spacious gym, a kitchen, and locker rooms for showering.  Download the Fort McDermitt study guide.

Urban Los Angeles:  As always, our urban immersion will take place in the neighborhoods of  South Los Angeles.  Our 2007 program was extremely well received by our participants.  We will once again be housed in the spacious Vermont Square United Methodist Church. The service experience is enhanced by a day of touring the city, visiting social services agencies, feeding the homeless on Skid Row and spending an evening at the beach. This will be an exciting urban immersion experience.  Our facility includes showers and indoor toilets.  Download the South LA study guide.

Want to learn more about Indian people?  We have found a very good and readable source called "Native American FAQs Handbook" by George Russell.  We received Mr. Russell's permission to duplicate portions of the book and have included this in the prep packet.  If you are interested in purchasing the entire book, please visit Mr. Russell's web site at www.nativedata.com.  Even if you don't want to purchase the book, the site is a great source for more information.
