Other Ways to Support SSP!

McDermitt, Nevada

Download the Fort McDermitt study guide.

Sierra Service Project continues its long relationship with the Fort McDermitt Tribe of Shoshone-Paiute Indians, where we have worked for many summers.  The Fort McDermitt Reservation is home to about 300 tribal members and is located a few miles from the tiny town of McDermitt.  It is remote, quiet and beautiful.

Accommodations.  As in the past, we will be staying at the McDermitt Combined School.  We'll be housed in the gym, use the locker rooms for showers, and cook in the kitchen there.

Location.  The town of McDermitt is located 100 miles north of Winnemucca, Nevada.  It sits right on top of the Nevada-Oregon state border.  (In fact, half of the gym is in Oregon and half is in Nevada!)

Type of work.  The housing on the reservation is very old and we have always found more work there than we can complete in a summer.  In the past, we have done lots of roofing, built ramps and stairs and done interior repairs.

Driving Directions: The McDermitt Combined School is located two blocks off of Highway 95.  The town of McDermitt is 75 miles directly north of Winnemucca, NV.  If you are approaching McDermitt from the south, turn right at the market.  You will see the school after two short blocks.  The school is just south of the state line, so if you reach the “Welcome to Oregon” sign, you’ve gone too far!  Driving Times
